How Long Should Your Faceless YouTube Videos Be?
There's a lot of conflicting advice about video length. Here's what the actual data shows from our portfolio of 300+ channels.
The Sweet Spot: 8–15 Minutes
For most faceless YouTube niches, 8–15 minute videos perform best. Here's why:
- Under 8 minutes: No mid-roll ads. Your RPM is cut in half. You need 2x the views to earn the same revenue.
- 8–15 minutes: 2–3 mid-roll ad placements. Optimal viewer retention. Easy to maintain quality throughout.
- 15–25 minutes: More ad placements but retention starts to drop. Works for documentary-style content.
- 25+ minutes: Diminishing returns. Retention drops below 40% for most channels. Only works for long-form documentary or educational deep dives.
Niche-Specific Recommendations
- Finance: 10–15 minutes (viewers want thorough analysis)
- Tech/AI: 8–12 minutes (fast-moving topics, get to the point)
- History/Documentary: 12–20 minutes (viewers expect deep dives)
- Sports: 8–12 minutes (highlight-driven, attention spans are shorter)
- Health: 8–12 minutes (actionable advice, not lectures)
The Real Rule
Your video should be exactly as long as the content demands — not one second longer. A tight 9-minute video beats a padded 15-minute video every time. If you find yourself adding filler to hit a time target, your video is too long.
Check your retention graphs. If there's a consistent drop-off at the 8-minute mark across multiple videos, your natural length is 8 minutes. Don't fight the data.
