How to Increase Your YouTube RPM (Revenue Per Mille)

Devon Canup · March 2026 · 8 min read

Getting more views is hard. Getting more money per view is surprisingly easy if you know the levers. Here are the strategies that have increased RPM by 30–60% across our portfolio.

1. Make Videos Over 8 Minutes

This is the single biggest RPM lever. Videos over 8 minutes qualify for mid-roll ads. A 12-minute video with 3 ad placements earns 2–3x more than a 6-minute video with just a pre-roll.

But don't pad content. Make 8+ minute videos by going deeper on topics, not by adding filler.

2. Target High-CPM Audience Demographics

Viewers aged 25–54 in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia generate the highest CPMs. Create content that appeals to this demographic. Avoid topics that skew under-18 (gaming compilations, memes, etc.).

3. Optimize Ad Break Placement

YouTube's auto-placement puts ads at random intervals. Manual placement lets you put ads at natural break points where viewers are least likely to click away. Place mid-rolls after you deliver value, not in the middle of a key point.

4. Increase Session Watch Time

If viewers watch multiple videos in one session, YouTube shows more ads per session and your RPM increases. Use end screens, cards, and "watch next" callouts to keep viewers on your channel.

5. Enable All Ad Formats

In YouTube Studio, make sure all ad formats are enabled: display ads, overlay ads, skippable ads, non-skippable ads, and bumper ads. More ad format options = more competition among advertisers = higher CPMs.

6. Publish at Optimal Times

Upload when your highest-CPM audience is active. For US viewers: Tuesday–Thursday, 2–4 PM EST. This front-loads your views with high-CPM viewers before the algorithm distributes globally.
