5 YouTube Niches That Look Good But Don't Pay

Devon Canup · March 2026 · 8 min read

Every week someone in our community says "I want to start a gaming channel" or "I'm thinking about doing motivation videos." And every week we have the same conversation.

1. Gaming Compilations

Why it looks good: Massive audience. Easy to produce. Clips everywhere.

Why it doesn't pay: $2–$5 CPMs. The audience skews young (under 18), which means advertisers pay pennies. You need millions of views per month to make meaningful revenue. Plus, copyright strikes are a constant threat.

2. Motivational / Inspirational Quotes

Why it looks good: Easy to produce. Stock footage + music + text overlay = done.

Why it doesn't pay: $1–$3 CPMs. The audience doesn't have buying intent. Nobody watching "believe in yourself" compilations is about to buy a $5,000 product. Advertisers know this.

3. Celebrity Gossip / Drama

Why it looks good: Viral potential. Trendy topics. Easy hooks.

Why it doesn't pay: $3–$6 CPMs, and the content has a shelf life of 48 hours. You're on a treadmill. Plus, defamation risks and YouTube's content policies make this a minefield.

4. ASMR / Relaxation

Why it looks good: Massive subscriber counts on top channels.

Why it doesn't pay: $2–$4 CPMs. Viewers often fall asleep during ads (literally). Ad completion rates are the lowest on YouTube in this category.

5. General "Top 10" / List Channels

Why it looks good: Infinite topics. Easy format.

Why it doesn't pay: $3–$7 CPMs, and you're competing with channels that have been doing this for 10 years with millions of subscribers. The format is commoditized. There's no defensible position.

What to Pick Instead

Every niche above has a higher-paying cousin. Gaming → gaming tech reviews ($12 CPM). Motivation → personal finance ($25 CPM). Celebrity → business biography ($15 CPM). Find the adjacent niche where the audience has money and buying intent.
