YouTube Video Editing for Beginners: CapCut vs DaVinci Resolve vs Premiere Pro

The most paralyzing question for new creators: which editing software should I use? Here's the answer based on where you actually are, not where you want to be.

CapCut: The Beginner's Best Friend

Cost: Free (with premium features at $9.99/month)
Platform: Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android
Learning curve: 2–4 hours to be functional

CapCut's killer features for faceless creators: auto-captions (surprisingly accurate), built-in stock footage library, easy text animation, and simple multi-track editing.

Use CapCut if: You're just starting, you want to get videos out fast, you're editing on mobile, or your channel isn't generating income yet.

DaVinci Resolve: The Professional Free Tool

Cost: Free (Studio version $295 one-time)
Platform: Mac, Windows, Linux
Learning curve: 15–20 hours to be functional

DaVinci Resolve is used by professional Hollywood editors. The free version has essentially no meaningful limitations for YouTube creators. Color grading is best-in-class.

Use DaVinci if: You're serious about video quality, you have time to learn, you want a tool that scales with you.

Adobe Premiere Pro

Cost: $55/month (or $60/month for all Adobe apps)
Platform: Mac, Windows
Learning curve: 10–15 hours

The industry standard. Excellent if you're already in the Adobe ecosystem (Photoshop for thumbnails, After Effects for intros). Hard to justify the subscription cost when DaVinci is free and equally capable.

Use Premiere if: You're already paying for Adobe Creative Cloud, or you're coming from a professional video background.

The Honest Recommendation

Start with CapCut. Get your first 10 videos done. Learn what you actually need from an editor. Then decide if you need to upgrade. Most channels making $5K+/month are still using the free version of DaVinci Resolve.

The editing software is not the variable. The content quality is the variable. Don't let tool selection delay your first upload by a single day.
